The inside of the cavity

Why Is the Blue Porcelain Inside My Wolf Oven Chipping?

The short answer

Because porcelain moves with the steel behind it. Wolf states that it can chip, or craze into fine lines and cracks, as the cavity expands and contracts through temperature swings, self clean above all, and that a coloured interior shows the result more plainly. For the contractor

Two habits genuinely accelerate it, and the use and care guide names both. Lining the cavity floor or the side walls with aluminium foil, or standing cookware straight on that floor, damages the porcelain interior and voids the manufacturer’s warranty. The second is letting a spill bake on; sugary, acidic and tomato based sauces are singled out, and they should come out once the interior is safe to touch.

Clean it the way the guide asks: lift baked deposits with a razor blade before running a clean cycle, then wash the cavity with soap and water so no cleaning chemical is still in there when it heats. Commercial oven cleaners and liner coatings stay away from it entirely. Worth a second opinion: porcelain lifting in flakes rather than crazing, or bare metal showing under an element.

Two questions that usually follow

Does a chipped cavity have to be replaced?

Rarely. The guide treats chips and fine cracks as cosmetic and notes that some of them are permanent without affecting function. What changes that is porcelain flaking away, or damage on the cavity floor beneath an element, where spills then sit against bare steel.

Is the blue cavity more fragile than a grey one?

No. The material is the same; the guide notes only that cosmetic imperfections may be more visible in a coloured oven cavity. A pale craze line that would vanish against light grey enamel reads as a scar against deep blue, which is why this question arrives about blue cavities far more often.
